But it had gotten to the point where the front row at the L.A. Forum was all Hollywood celebrities as opposed to your fans. Even though [guitarist] Daryl [Stuermer] and I werent technically in [Genesis], we toured as the band. We all knew he was going to be a great player. Frank was doing time within time. Suddenly, Im there with no income. Not at all. most great drummers won't ever do that, because they live for their drums. Everybody had a say. One tour, he bumped it up by bringing in this guy, Jeff Simmons. I saw everybody in those days. Yeah. It lets me read for about 90 seconds before it yanks the article. Phil and I, from the very first rehearsal when he sat down and we started jamming together, we just locked, he said. And of course, my mom loved music. The news that he left didnt come out until 1996 or so. And he put down some intense, complicated stuff. And he just totally shot down the idea of doing anything. It`s not true. This is the same time that Chicago and Elton John are recording there. Oh, yeah. That was every night. Ive already played stuff for the guys. Well, he was a little different from me. Yeah. One day, he got pretty frustrated with me and literally cussed me out in front of everybody. In Europe, everyone in the audience knew all of their catalog. When I worked with him, the core of the group was Napoleon on saxophone and singing, Bruce Fowler on trombone, Tom Fowler on bass, [percussionist] Ruth Underwood, George ,and Frank. It is an impressing line up. What happened with the Calling All Stations period with Genesis? That wasnt going to work. Right. It was pretty profitable. Chester Cortez Thompson (born December 11, 1948) is an American drummer best known for his tenures with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, Weather Report, Santana, the progressive rock band Genesis and Phil Collins as a solo artist. Man, what a phenomenal singer and piano player. You have four guys with British accents [Collins, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, and Steve Hackett], and there was tour management and a couple of other guys, all with British accents. I think that Bruford said that in 1992-93 for the "Notes of the Edge" website. I mean to be keep in the background in their importance in the bands. I was just thinking, What in the heck is going on here?, I imagine one day you guys will speak again. But he just enjoyed being around us since we were so lively and fun. I said, Tony, in view of what Phil said in this interview, I guess I dont need to hold these dates any more? He said, What are you talking about? The guys work ethic he just worked. But he still had that American stuff; it was a big part of his background, and we just hit it off immediately. Everyone had gotten over themselves by then and it was just really fun from top to bottom. It was interesting because Tom Fowler, our bass player, had broken his hand on tour. Not sure what's up there? He was part of a band in Milwaukee that played a place that was the place to stop and jam when you were on tour. The problem is that after a couple of albums Tony lost xcontrol and Phil decided what path to take, making a parallel solo career that is comonly mistaken with Genesis later albums, that's what I blame him for.Actually I havent heard Hacketts Genesis revisited - is it good? [Laughs] There was no way I could learn it by the next day. I dont know if they were connected owner-wise, but there was a whole circuit of those theaters. Even though Daryl and I werent technically in the band [Genesis], we toured as the band. Theyd add horn sections and stuff. It took me a while to get over it, but I really wish him well. I called Frank immediately and he wasnt happy about it, but he knew that my background was more jazz and stuff. . He was a guitarist that was comic relief, almost. That happened because of ODonel Levy. I had no idea. . Peter Criss (Even lead vocals), Keith Moon, Carmine Appice, Roger Taylor (Much better backing vocalist than anybody else and even lead a couple of times). If you were in Franks band, you had to be willing to be silly. Just to mention a few key members that played drums. Oh, my goodness. But Steve wa always a Genesis fan, even when he wanted to make some modifications, he only could achive that making it himself, and lets be honest, he used an expensive cast: LOL. This new thing Ive been working on with my friends in L.A., its [bassist] Pee Wee Hill and [keyboardist] Michiko Hill, his wife. On the We Cant Dance tour in 1992, did you sense that Phil wasnt going to continue with Genesis after it? When Daryl Stuermer joined in 1978, did you have a compatriot that was a little more like you? He was already going on tour in summers between school. In my opinion, everyone has to sell out a little bit to survive. He figured it out pretty quickly. I never liked the idea of re-recording old favourites but Im getting a little bit intrested now. Still his guitarplay wasvery important to the music even if his composing didnt reach the albums. It was kind of like asking your buddy to come cover your band because suddenly youre doing something different. What a nice man, Don Van Vliet. [Laughs] He figured it out pretty quickly. Always wondered what happened to Chester. The studio had tanks in the studio since they dealt with it all the time. Most of the drummers have musical studies, to make arrangements you need to read and write music, even if you don't make the arrangements, you need to read music in order to understand the new arrangements that bands do after every tour in old songs. I was playing in the San Francisco production of The Wiz back then. Phil Collins (onion head) <-nickname), is a great drummer and that is where i believed he should have stayed. Whens the tour? And Tony Smiths eye lighted up like Id rarely seen. Theyve got a studio. Its amazing what you can get used to. Several times we were on Phils tour in 2005 and they had meetings about how to put this tour together. That aint me. But basically, for 14 years hed tour every other year and Genesis would tour in the off years. His name was Birdlegs [James Youman]. Lee Kerslake: he sings backing vocals but again not the main composer in Uriah Heep. I enjoyed it though. Yeah. But Im over it now. I didnt find out any of this until later, but the timing was amazing. The first few stadiums, its like, Oh, my goodness! And then it starts feeling normal. What was he like? There was quite a bit of Louis Jordan. We laughed a lot. I still thought it would just be a couple of tours. In the meantime, hed gotten a solo record deal. Chester Thompson sheds some light on relationship with Phil Collins. Long story short: Collins turned up in a bad mood for the 2010 "Going Back" tour and griped at Thompson because Thompson hadn't prepared the Motown drum parts in enough detail. It ended up being a little awkward since they were going to be down there for seven weeks. They were great writers. No, I'm not a big fan of Collins, and no, I don't have any of his solo albums. I wish I could afford my son. But back to the point, the investment in this album was big, Bruford, Levin, Wetton, Ian Mc'Donnald, Julian Colbeck, etc are not cheap, and he knew from thestartthis album would never be a hit. Thats where you started hearing Motown and stuff. Just listen to Brand X andlive Genesis. and (apart fromthe bluesalbum)he hasstayed on the same ground, progrelated and close to classical guitarmusic. Ginger Baker: mainly a composer as soloist. He might have some fives and sevens instead of triplets, things like that. He was brilliant. In fact, we wound up doing a tour opening for them. I did most of my tracks like Inca Roads with George on piano. I dont think hes holding a grudge. Also, drum parts in Genesis are not very easy to play and sing at the same time on stage. During this time, the drummer somehow also found time to tour with Santana and the Bee Gees and maintain a solo career. Yeah. Oh, yeah. It was really brilliant. To be honest, the problem started with all the band specially because many people believe (I also do) that the relation between Tony and Steve wasn't good since he recorded Voyage (Tony was clear, no solo projects, and Steve didn't invited him but calling Mike and Phil), plus the fact that Tony was suposed to be the main songwritter, but Steve wanted to fight this position with him. Neal Peart: great drummer, lyricist, and sometimes composer of the music in Rush. The difference being I wasnt so much into the English drummers, like Keith Moon, and he was. It was just there. Mike says that Phils drumming added a new dimension to Genesis. IMO, he is a good composer, a funny showman, a very good lead & backing singer, and one of the best drummers in Rock music. I was like, Man, Ive got to have some time with my family. The new managers were like, Absolutely not. I had a conversation with Mike Rutherford, not knowing what they were going to be doing. I was the second drummer. From Jazz (Weather Report), to Rock (Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention), to Pop (Genesis/Phil Collins) to Gospel (Ron Kenoly), Chester Thompson has surpassed the boundaries of musical genres. I never went in under any pretense of thinking it was going to be anything other than what it was. That is when we actually had soul music stations. We normally had a lot of eye contact at shows. I know my reaction to Hacketts "Genesis revisited" was- Hmm, I guess hes running out of money As I wrote, I find Hacketts soloalbums uneven but on the other handhis music is solid (apart from that GTR-thing, didnt like it!) This is why I don't think they sold out or did it for any other reason than that is what they wanted to do. For lack of a better word, they are really, really British. I knowsome people are not going to like my commentaries . As it turned out, I wound up doing a little, brief drum-clinic tour down there in Australia. Thats because it was getting close to time to go back out with Phil. They brought in Bill Bruford for that one tour [in 1976], but it was a fairly short tour. Man, what a wacky period. They were having a little congratulations party for Tony [Smith] to celebrate 30 years of management or something. Apparently Phil and Bill grew up near each other and knew each other fairly well. And then he added the drums and it was like, Forget about it. We were all in the car going to the first show in Japan. She was with Michael Jackson and was actually working with Prince when he passed. When Phil said that his 2004 tour was going to be his last one, did you believe him? Zidkyahu was used on the tour.]. In 2017, Collins revealed that he was a type-2 diabetic, undergoing treatment with a hyperbaric chamber after the condition caused obsesses on his foot which became infected. I didnt see Phils tour. Had they said, Were going to change the feel a bit, I would have been fine with that. It turned out he was Ben E. Kings musical director. Were you intimidated when you walked into that rehearsal space? Im pretty excited about this project with them. Peter says that Stevewrote things they all liked but quite a lot that they didnt like. Chester's performance and recording experiences have influenced over three decades of music and musicians. Do you think if Genesis come to America, youd want to go see the show? He's a good drummer. I called Joe and was like, I just got this message from Wayne saying not to come to the studio. I think some of that might have something to do with it. George and Napoleon were from San Jose and were living in Hawaii when Frank offered them the audition. I dont know details of what happened with that, but I think Peter was busy putting something else together. Captain Beefheart plays harmonica on the album. Mike, Tony and Peter seem to be working very well together composing and its hard for Phil and Stevein the beginning to contribute. It was just there. Its not something he did. Again, I think its fantastic that hes playing with his son. So, he had to be at the front of the stage. And Caribou Ranch was magical. They had presented him with this amazing gift. Chester just says 'maybe' he wouldn't want to play the same Genesis songs yet again on a new tour, but IMO he doesn't give a definite no. I was never in a teenage band. He would have subdivisions within a bar. This means nothing at all, it's almost a tradition. Genesis, as soon as they could afford it, started chartering planes for tours. Mike Portnoy, Lars Ulrich: I don`t know nothing about them. Not at all. The drum instructor left and Id gotten to know the head of the department. I worked with him during a really happy period in his life. I agree, one weak album, because GTR was a multi members enterproce that involved even Steve Howe, but it wa a disaster. But I recently read some speculation here on Chester and Phil's falling out, and I thought people might like to hear it from the man himself.
